Mohammed Rafi (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) was an Indian playback singer. He is considered one of the greatest and most influential singers.
Mohammed Rafi is considered to be one of the greatest playback singers in the history of Indian Cinema. In the four decades of his career, he sang for most of the top male actors. Rafi’s early forays into Bollywood were not limited just to playback singing, he also acted in a few films. He acted like Laila Majnu (1945) and Jugnu (1947). His major hit was with Noor Jahan singing the song Yahaan Badla Wafa Ka from the film Jugnu (1947). In 1948 on the first anniversary of Indian Independence, he was awarded a Silver Medal by Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1965 he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India. The superhit song Kya Hua Tera Waada won him the National Award too. On July 31, 1980, at the age of 55, Mohammed Rafi died of a heart attack. He was buried on a rainy day in Bombay. His funeral procession is said to have had over 10,000 people. The magnitude of talent that Mohammed Rafi had in his voice still remains unmatched.
